Terrific towers

Known as the ‘Town of fine towers’, there were around 70 in the 14th century, but only 14 remain today. These sky-scraping beauties vary in height, and you can even climb some. Torre Grossa is the tallest at 54m – head to the top to admire romantic frescoes inside, and epic views outside.

Go for a wander

The centre of San Gimignano comes with the UNESCO seal of approval, and Romanesque and Gothic dominate the design side of things. Navigate the narrow lanes and ivy-covered arches to discover boutique shops, cosy restaurants and gourmet delis around every cobbled corner. Piazza della Cisterna is at the heart, so pitch up for a bit of people watching while you dine and unwind.

Food and drink delights

Cured, Golden Ham and Vernaccia white wine are local specialities you can’t leave town without trying. In the historic centre, world-champion ice cream at Gelateria Dondoli is a feast for the eyes, as well as your taste buds. Owner Sergio’s experimental flavours range from saffron-spiked to creamy gorgonzola and walnut.
