The Famagusta Gate is one of the three original gates in the historic Venetian walls of Nicosia, the capital of Cyprus. It served as the eastern entrance to the walled city. Today, it has been beautifully restored and functions as a major cultural centre.
It is located in the southeastern part of the old city of Nicosia, within the Republic of Cyprus (the southern part of the divided capital). It's situated at the end of an avenue leading towards the real city of Famagusta in the east.
The gate was built by the Venetians around 1567 as part of their extensive fortifications around Nicosia. It replaced an older gateway from the earlier Lusignan period. It was originally known as 'Porta Giuliana' after Giulio Savorgnan, the engineer who designed the fortifications. It was the main entrance for traffic coming from the east, particularly from Famagusta.
Yes, you can visit the Famagusta Gate. The exterior is always visible as part of the city walls. The interior (the cultural centre) is accessible during its operating hours or when events are being held there. You can check the Nicosia Municipality's schedule for specific opening times and listings of events.
