The Canal and Byzantine remains

The Canal and Byzantine remains

The Potidea canal, 40 metres wide, has been here since ancient times. It was built, possibly in 315 BC to link the Thermaic and Toroneos gulfs, and is the only entrance to the peninsula of Kassandra. In Byzantine times, the place was called Portes, or gates, and you can still see the remains of its fortifications.
