Herculaneum was another Roman town destroyed by the eruption of Vesuvius. While Pompeii was buried under ash and pumice, Herculaneum was engulfed in a pyroclastic surge (a flow of hot gas and rock), which carbonised organic materials and sealed the town, preserving it in even better condition than Pompeii. Herculaneum was also a smaller, wealthier town than Pompeii.
Herculaneum is located on the Bay of Naples, in the Campania region of Italy, and close to Sorrento.
Key sites include the House of Neptune and Amphitrite (with its beautiful mosaics), the Samnite House, the Thermal Baths, the Skeletal remains found in boat houses on the old shoreline and the College of the Augustales.
Wear comfortable shoes suitable for walking on uneven surfaces. Bring water, sunscreen, a hat, and sunglasses, especially during the warmer months. Consider bringing a camera to capture the incredible sights.
