The Pont du Gard is an ancient Roman aqueduct bridge located in the south of France, near the town of Vers-Pont-du-Gard in the Occitanie region. Built around 50 AD, it was designed to carry fresh water from the springs of Uzès to the Roman colony of Nemausus (modern-day Nîmes). Standing at 48.8 metres high, it is the tallest of all Roman aqueducts and a masterpiece of ancient engineering.
The Pont du Gard was constructed in the 1st century AD, around 50 AD, during the reign of Emperor Claudius. This makes the structure over 1,970 years old. Despite its age, it remains remarkably intact thanks to ongoing preservation efforts and robust original craftsmanship.
Yes, visitors can walk across the middle tier of the Pont du Gard. The bridge features a raised footpath that allows safe pedestrian access, offering breathtaking views of the surrounding countryside and the river below. Access is included with admission to the site, and guided walks are also available for those interested in learning more about its history.
